Presurgery speech therapy

Printer-friendly version

Hi Dr. Thomas

I was wondering how long you like clients to attend speech therapy before undergoing feminisation laryngoplasty? I have just started seeing a speech therapist, and it would be good to know what sort of timeframe I should be looking at if I were to decide on a surgical solution.

Thanks for your help!

There are a number of variables. It depends how quickly you pick up on techniques that improve your voice. It is on how good your therapist is at teaching those techniques. My sense is that, in general, therapy does no harm other than costing you time and money. As long as you are learning something, it's worth continuing. When you feel that you have plateaued and are not learning anything additional, that's the time to consider alternative, and perhaps more risky interventions.
