Hi, I have been reading your site the past few days. It is one of the best I have read on this subject, and I thank you for this site.
I am a singer and I'm concerned b/c I have had chronic hoarseness/laryngitis for 6-8 months. I haven't lost my voice completely, but my voice delays when I try to sing a note, I get phlegm that often affects my voice quality. And, my range is not very good anymore. I am losing the high and low notes. The most troublesome symptom is that I when talk and sing my voice will often "skip" like when you are talking into a fan (like on the movie tommy boy). Or it sounds like Chewbacca from Star Wars. It happens randomly and I can't predict it. I am very concerned about this last symptom as I have never had this one before these last few months. I do like to sing the breathy style sometimes but I don't do it exclusively. I do have hypothyroidism, but my levels and symptoms for that are very controlled with thyroid meds. I also have high parathyroid hormone and high ionized calcium levels and so I might have primary hyperparathyroidism according to a doctor. Could this somehow affect my voice in some way, if a parathyroid tumor was in a certain location? I also had cushings's disease and had tumor's removed in my pituitary gland and adrenal glands were removed completely. So, I am on hydrocortisone for life. So, I have hormonal issues, but not sure that it would cause this.
I did see a doctor on your list about 4 years ago in Utah and he took a look and at that time saw swelling and determined it was due to LPR. But, I didn't want to take nexium and the like because I didn't like the side effects and I heard it can just make you produce even more acid because the body detects that there isn't enough. But, I wasn't having the skipping problem. Just some hoarseness. And, after my adrenal glands removed, my voice sounded and felt better than ever. But, a year later and I am having problems again.
I know you can diagnose without seeing me, but I wanted to know if my history sparks anything you think could be involved that I could tell a doctor (I have an appt for a different doctor next week). And, have you heard of anyone complaining of the chewbacca sound?
Thanks!
Really the only thing I know
Really the only thing I know is to have an accurate diagnosis regarding what is causing your vocal cords not to vibrate correctly. If you did not get an answer that was satisfactory, you might consider seeing a different laryngologist. http://old.voicedoctor.net/physicians
Different physicians have different skills.
