Parts of the voice box

Epiglottis

The epiglottis is visible in this view of the larynx, but is commonly off the screen as in this view. The epiglottis has large range of normal shapes. It functions as a valve over the voice box, folding down with each swallow and covering the inlet to the trachea. Food and liquids are generally prevented from even touching the vocal folds.

The epiglottis is made of flexible cartilage and folds over when swallowing to seal a lid over the voice box and prevent things other than air from entering the windpipe.

Arytenoid

The arytenoid is visible in an open position as well as a closed position.

False fold

The false vocal folds are visible above the true vocal folds between the white arrows.
