Q: You have described my symptoms exactly. My present doctors do not seem to understand my co ndition. Can you recommend that I take/do xxxx? A: I really cannot prescribe nor make a recommendation specific to you. I often recommend taking a copy of the web page that describes your symptoms so well to discuss with your present doctor if you are generally happy with the doctor. If not consider getting a second opinion. All doctors are different in their approaches to specific problems. |

Q: I am interested in surgery to feminize the voice? A: Various surgical procedures are discussed including Fem Lar and CTA. |

Q: My father is undergoing surgery within the next two weeks for paralyzed vocal cords causing complete inability to swallow. It seems as if an experienced surgeon is critical. Could you possibly recommend someone in my area? A: I list a few people who orient their practice toward voice disorders. That doesn't necessarily make them good, so you would still have to evaluate them yourself. See other physicians under the Links tab. There may well be others in your area that I do not know of. |

Q: I am writing to you to find out more info on vocal cord polyps. What is a vocal cord polyp? Is it pre-cancerous? What could contribute the growth of vocal cord polyp? What signs and symptoms do we need to be more aware of? When is the appropriate time for surgery, and what are the risks of surgery? A: This site has has divided up each disorder into how to diagnose, medically treat-therapy, surgically treat-surgery and photos or audio-media of each vocal disorder that I know of. So for polyps, I diagnose them this way, treat initially this way, surgically remove them this way and here are some photos of the condition. One should be able to find similar pages for other vocal disorders under each heading. |

VOICE DISORDERS represents the opinions of its author - James P. Thomas, M.D. It is my attempt to inform you, the web-surfer, about voice disorders from a physicians perspective. It is specifically not meant to establish a doctor patient relationship with you. I have an office in Oregon where patients who wish to be seen and establish a relationship may reach me. The information on this site represent my understanding of the voice and are primarily related to my study with other physicians, most particularly laryngologists. Journal references are provided where appropriate. This site has not been peer reviewed (like all web sites) as a medical journal would be. There is no advertising on the site. Please understand the contents of this site and probably most sites with medical information in this light. |
