To learn more on diagnosing voice problems the following opportunities are available with Dr. Thomas.

Observation

  1. Duration: Periods for part of a day up to a week are available.
  2. Requirements: Advance permission from Dr. Thomas.
  3. Application: No formal application required. You may contact Dr. Thomas by e-mail or mail to request this opportunity.
  4. Who: Students interested in medicine, medical students, speech therapists and speech therapy students, voice teachers, residents in otolaryngology, physicians from the US or abroad.
  5. Notes: Patients always have the final say on whether an observer will be allowed into the exam room. My experience has been that perhaps one patient per month prefers not to have observers. Most patients welcome the opportunity to have others learn how to diagnose and treat voice disorders.

Single Patient Observation

  1. Duration: A single patient.
  2. Requirements: Advance permission from Dr. Thomas & patient.
  3. Application: no formal application required. You may contact Dr. Thomas by e-mail, mail or phone to request this opportunity.
  4. Who: This is usually done by a referring professional such as a physician, speech therapist or voice teacher who wants to observe their own patient being examined.
  5. Notes: As always, patients have the final say on whether an observer will be allowed into the exam room.

Fellowship

  1. Duration: One to 12 months. Many people have chosen an observational fellowship for about 3 months.
  2. Requirements: Advance permission by formal application to Dr. Thomas.
  3. Application: please initiate the process by sending CV and cover letter describing your interest in studying voice; mail or e-mail acceptable. Additional requirements will be forwarded to you.
  4. Who: Physicians who have finished their residency in otolaryngology.
  5. Physicians outside the United States are welcome to apply. Without an Oregon license, training is solely observational (though no less valuable in my opinion).
  6. Stipend: If accepted for a year fellowship and you are licensed in Oregon, a salary of $52,000 per year is available. If you are interested in a fellowship longer than three months, but less than a year, a smaller stipend is available to offset housing expenes. In general the first three months are observational, longer stays would offer the opportunity to take on more responsibility.
  7. Malpractice: If you are licensed in Oregon, then I will cover the cost of your malpractice insurance.

Reading

I detail the process I use to evaluate voice disorders on this site under diagnose. It is worth reading this section if you are considering any of the above study options.

Travel

While studying under any one person is worthwhile to extend your understanding of a process, there is much additional insight to be gained by studying with a number of people. I would strongly encourage you to spend time with several people who specialize in voice disorders, not just myself. See my background.
